Attend the Tale of Sweeney Todd… in Shoe Style

Posted by jitterbugbaby in Boots, Celebrity Shoe Style

Last week, I was lucky enough to score an invitation to a preview screening of the upcoming Tim Burton-directed Sweeney Todd starring Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, and the great muse of Tim Burton (and sighing fans everywhere, myself included), Johnny Depp.

I post no spoilers here. I will only say that it was great and that never has there been a better match of source material and director’s vision. And the music is fantastic, which I had forgotten, not having heard it since I was in middle school.

There’s a half hour featurette available at the Apple website about the making of the movie, which includes a peek at the costume design work. And that, of course, got me thinking about shoes. No surprise there, right?

If you’re after that Victorian-inspired boot with a Sweeney feel, you’ll want something with a bunch of laces and/or buttons for period-accuracy and a good durable sole so you don’t slip in all that blood and/or mince meat.

Something like these Jessica Bennett Guard boots ($236) with a removable gaiter.

Or these olive Maximum boots from Exchange by Charles David (on sale for $165) to match your favorite Mrs. Lovett ensemble.

You could even go for these rose-embellished Mark Nason black leather boots ($479), if you’re willing to pony up more cash.  Although, if your meat pie business suddenly starts raking in the dough (no pun intended) hand over fist when the new barber upstairs sets up shop, you might have just the funds you need for these pretty boots.

If you want a different take on “authentic” Sweeney Todd footwear, take a page from the playful sartorial guidebook of the man who’s bringing Sweeney to life this time around and wear your own much-loved work boots.

More stocking stuffers for shoe lovers: Part…um…

Posted by shoesense in General

I don’t know how many of these I wrote already, but listen: we’re entering the straight line for Christmas, so we’d all better hurry.

I’m considering this set for myself, really–but I think they’d make a neat gift for the shoe-lover on go:

Shoes and Stuff travel bags–what a wonderful way to keep yourself organized when you’re on the go! The “stuff” bag can be used for dirty laundry. The “shoes” bags are insufficient, so I’m guessing you’ll need several sets. $22 for a set of 3 at Wrapables.

Fashion writer crush: Cintra Wilson

Posted by shoesense in Dolce & Gabbana Shoes

I occasionally get blog-crushes and writer crushes, so smitten I become with the ways with words of fashion-warriors. This time–instant crush on Cintra Wilson, who shops at the new Dolce & Gabbana store in Manhattan, so we won’t have to.

I loved the whole article in the Fashion & Style section of The New York Times (“Critical Shopper” column), but here’s a fragment that made me guffaw:

The second-floor shoe section is wrapped around an S-shaped sectional couch in black velvet. Dolce & Gabbana shoes look sensational — exotic, cruel little weapons. Sadly, they can be hit or miss in terms of adhering to a human foot. I went straight for pointy crocodile pumps, dyed arterial red ($1,825). I was salivating with a desire to feel their blood on the dance floor. Agony!

I was ready to commit $695 to pumps with chrome toes and heel shafts. For any girl who has lived among Belgian cobblestones, these shoes represent $35 a month in heel repair that could go straight to the dermatology slush fund. But the curse was upon them: they had apparently been molded on the Queen of Sheba’s goat hoof, or perhaps a ball-and-claw table leg.

Ain’t that the truth!
