Happy Easter to all of our readers out there who celebrate it.

And of course, this wouldn’t be a Shoe Blog without a footwear suggestion of some kind, right? So in case plain old pastels just don’t do it for you anymore, consider adding an edge with this sheer hand-painted organza floral pump from Dolce & Gabbana, with the unexpected contrast of a wooden conical heel:

The Dolce & Gabbana ‘Watercolor’ pump is available for preorder at Nordstrom for $995.

Shoes: The New “It” Fashion Item of Our Times

Posted by shoesense in Shoe Trends

Oh, how long I’ve been waiting to run this headline! But you know, if the New York Times says it, it must be true! Bill Cunningham, the photographer who so aptly captures the spirit of the time in his “Style on the Street” series in the NYT put up a maahvelous slide show on shoes (photographed in Paris) which captured his imagination and made him pronounce that yes, the shoes have completely replaced the handbag as the “it” fashion item. It’s been tentatively said before–I think people started saying it just about the time the spring collections started coming in–but I guess it’s becoming more definitive now.

So, shoe-lovers, rejoice! One more reason you can go ahead and indulge your passion. It’s practically your solemn duty as fashionistas to add more gorgeous styles to your collection. And by all means, go find some inspiration in this beautiful slide show (leave the sound on; and try not to drool too much over the keyboard):

Friday Shoe History Corner at the V&A

Posted by jitterbugbaby in Christian Dior Shoes, Roger Vivier Shoes, Shoe History Corner, Shoes at the Museum

After last week’s Friday Shoe History Corner trip to the Louvre, I thought we’d take a gander at London’s V&A this week.  Their Golden Age of Couture show (focused on Paris and London between 1947 and 1957) is now closed, but the website is still up, so in case you didn’t get to see it in person, here are a few of the Roger Vivier footwear highlights.  Being a French designer, of course, these all fall into the “Paris” half of the show, and some of them have a suitably couture over-the-top decadence about them, while others rely on the simplicity of the shape to make a woman’s foot look divine.

V&A shoes 1

Coral and diamante embroidered satin, late 1950s, for Christian Dior

V&A shoes 2   V&A shoes 2.1

Pink satin embroidered with metallic thread and sequins, ca. 1958, for Christian Dior

V&A shoes 3

Coral and diamante embroidered satin, ca. 1958, for Christian Dior

V&A shoes 4

Remind you of the iconic pilgrim shoes that Shoesense adores?  Indeed.  This version is satin with a diamante buckle, from the late 1950s, for Christian Dior.

V&A shoes 5

Tulle over satin, 1954, for Christian Dior

Any of these would still make a strong statement at a party, and when the no-doubt uber fashionable ladies of the 1950s wore them out, I’ll bet they did the same thing.

“Shoes are such little sex objects”

Posted by shoesense in Christian Louboutin Shoes

…so says Valerie Steele, the director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, which just put up a Christian Louboutin show.

We’re not going to argue with that too much, not when she’s talking about the King of Red Soles and Spiky Heels. Go read the whole article in the New York Times: Tongues are Wagging Over Shoes. And if you’re in NY and a shoe lover–need I urge you to go see the exhibit?

If you’re not there and are a Louboutin fan, you should probably check out this Saks Fifth Ave video for a close-up of the maestro.
