Alternatives to Sky High Shoes

I was goofing around online the other day and saw a photo of a young celebrity nearly trip while wearing platform pumps.  She didn’t end up on her kiester, but it was close.  I was reminded of an event that happened several years ago, but have never forgotten it.  I didn’t tell anyone, not even Mr. R5, because it was so embarrassing.

I was in a pair of 4.5 inch platforms. The weather had turned windy and rainy and I struggled to open a door that was being blown shut by the wind.  I rushed into the building, and the door slammed behind me, throwing me off balance.  My wet stilettos hit the marble floor, I skittered across that lobby, going through all sorts of contortions, goofed my knee and broke one of the d#mn heels off.  BUT I didn’t fall.  It was quite an acomplishment, but there is no way it can be done with aplomb.

When I look at some of these 5.5 and 6 inch, double and triple platform shoes, with the heel being no more substantial than a pencil,  the phrase that comes to mind is, “these are an ankle waiting to break.”  I don’t know, maybe I am too cautious, maybe I realize that fifty year old  bones don’t heal like they used to, or maybe I am  just grouchy.  I find myself wearing more wedges, chunkier heels and a lower heel to toe ratio because the stability is greater.  While there were still extreme heels, we saw LOTs of kitten heels on last season’s  runway.

Let’s look at some wedges and low heels that will keep me from falling flat on my rump.

Stuart Weitzman Bukstrum $335 at Zappos  These are gorgeous.  However Weitzman shoes run narrow and small.

Daniblack Ace $105 at Zappos  I would like to see this shoe in person.  It is nothing like I have ever purchased, but it looks fun.

Salvatore Ferragamo Flo $495 at Zappos  Another beautiful professional shoe.

Christian Louboutan Miss Boxe $625 at Saks.com   Christian Louboutan IS  more than platforms.

Ash Wedge Boot  $275 at Saks.com  OK.  The only reason I don’t own these is because they don’t have my size.  They are a little high for my everyday needs, but are they wonderful or what.   I saw this boot in Phoenix, and all I wanted to do is touch it.  The salesguy kept giving me the stink eye. This one is beautiful..

I have told you about one of my high heel embarrassments, tell us one of YOURS!

A co-worker was getting out of her SUV with an armful of papers and file folders when her heel caught on the side-step (that helps you climb in, but obviously doesn’t help you get down). She almost landed on her face but decided to sacrifice the papers and folders and broke her fall with her palms.

I wish I had seen it happen so I could point and laugh.

(It’s always funny as long as it’s not happening to you.)

Personally speaking, i don't wear high heel shoes or sandals more often.Just for special occasions that i have to.And also, for rainy seasons,it's not so advisable i guess.

Whoops. Forgot to say she was actually wearing mary jane pumps with about a three inch heel. Not that high but apparently just high enough to fall in.

One of our team, Anna, flew up to Toronto to visit her then boyfriend. She tried to dress up nice because she hadn't seen him in a long time. She was running to give him a hug and a kiss and absolutely bit it in the middle of the arrivals terminal. So embarrassing. Luckily, he was very suave and caught her and turned the unsightly fall into a smooth dip ending in a kiss. Swoon.

Kristen…It is my experience that when the shoe is made for comfort, the heel height isn't that big a deal. They don't come cheap though. Cole Haan/Air Nike is my current favorite.

I once had a pair of kitten heels where the heel was places too far from the heel of the shoe. I had to be SO careful with those because my stride made the heel skid out from under me. So low heels and flats aren't always the solution. It is all the shoe's design.

Oh poor you! Marble is treacherous with any type of shoes, even flats. As are cobbblestones. The only time I went flying in heels was with very sturdy wedges on cobblestones in London. No wait correct that, I also go flying when wearing flats. Theyo just don't agree with me!

Most of my slips have been in stupid flip flops…they are like teflon when wet. My worst slip was down the steps at the top of the Lincoln Memorial in DC. It had rained for about 5 seconds before our ascension and on the way down my trusty flip flops helped me bite it on those marble steps…huge bruise on my ass! My brother-in-law certainly enjoyed it and I'm guessing my undies made it into a few tourists' photos – but i have to laugh!

Flats do not agree with my feet/legs/back – any suggestions for non-flat style but skirt worthy shoes for urban sightseeing?

There are multiple photos of LiLo losing her balance and falling down on her knees, and on her butt. This was Kim Kardashian.
