American Apparel’s Racy Leggings

I’ve been noticing a lot of my girlfriends wearing interesting leggings, stockings, tights and whatnot lately. They frequent everywhere from Filene’s to Wolford for them, but this here mama can’t afford any Wolford right now. There’s no doubt though, that legwear is very sexy and can totally change an outfit, and especially pair well with certain shoes.
So I’ve been looking at the American Apparel website; my friends shop at the store like addicts. I’m reading an interesting book by William Gibson called “Pattern Recognition,” where the protagonist resists all labels, emblems and signs of her clothes being corporate. She even has someone grind down the buttons on her Levi’s 501s so there is no evidence of the brand. American Apparel is a little like that, with its lack of logos, but also the opposite. If you wear a gold lame bikini in a certain cut and you live in Williamsburg, everyone knows you got it at American Apparel.
The tights are actually pretty cool, but I wonder if their photos of gals in tights are just a little bit too racy.
(Beware, some of the American Apparel photos on their website are NSFW! I didn’t post those ones!)
The Super Sheer Spiral Tights are $14.
The Sheer Luxe Solid Stripe is nice too. They’re $26 though, and that’s a bit steep for pantyhose for me.
I snapped a few photos at the store on the Lower East Side tonight.
The Double Diamond Fishnet is $25.
The Sheer Luxe Shapes Pantyhose are $28.
I would pair most of the American Apparel legwear with demure Dolce Vita heels and a sexy dress, or with a cute little pair of retro vintage boots and a simple t-shirt dress.
Betsey Johnson also makes great knee socks. More reports on those and my other new favorite legwear in a future post.

This reminds me of a period in the late 80's where patterned (sheer) stockings/nylons were being worn with uber-minis & called 'leggings' (truly opaque leggings were also big). I'm gonna say these are cute tights/stockings but not really leggings. Leggings are a close-fitting (usually knit fabric) pant that skims the legs and is opaque enough to still technically pass as a form of 'pants'.
Maybe this is silly semantics, but it became an issue the last time these were really big in fashion as some women were wearing shears & semi-sheers & calling them leggings … resulting in a bit more ya-ya flashing than most of the general populace appreciates.
LONGER tunics, shirt-dresses & tush-covering bottoms are the most successful ways of doing short matches with leggings.
Here's hoping people are sane & keep the sheerer styles with the mid-thigh or longer lenghts.
And yes, I know, there are always a few smokin' hot hardbody gals out there who can manage to wear anything & have it work for them. Most of us aren't her and can't aspire to that level of runway trendiness
