Vibram: Ask For A Five Finger Discount
Posted on June 29th, 2009 by r5bales under Athletic Shoes, Eco Friendly Shoes, General, Just for Kicks, Walking DisastersI am the youngest of a large family. When I was a toddler, my older siblings would put my dad’s leather gloves on my feet and pretend I was a trained monkey. We were easily entertained.
When I saw this photo it took me back to my childhood.
These shoes are by Vibram at about $75.00. Time Magazine named them one of the best inventions of 2007. Where have I been?
They offer a classic pump
A smart maryjane
and a stylish bootie.
I saw these in a store that specialized in outdoor gear. I asked for the five finger discount and the sales guy didn’t even change expression. No humour.
I don’t even know where to begin with these. I will let you all have your fun with them.

So ugly!

As someone who once dealt with outdoor sports on a daily basis, I’m pretty sure these shoes are designed to be functional— are they for surfing or windsurfing or kiteboarding? They look like they’d be ideal for maintaining footing on a board. Ugly, sure, but when I’m mid-sport and sweaty, I really don’t care how I look.

Saw this yesterday, and then today saw someone wearing these in metropolitan Madrid, Spain.

I’ll echo Scarlet’s comments - they are designed to be functional, which is to say they are designed to compliment the biomechanical function of the foot.
Feet are widely considered ugly, but have you seen some of the running shoes out there? The beauty of fivefingers is in what they allow you to do (run, hike, lift weights, walk around town — effectively barefoot).

Justin, I had to laugh at your comment on the ugly running shoes. I remember the first Nike running shoe. It was glow in the dark yellow with a neon blue swoosh. We looked at them and wondered who in the world would purchase something like that. Given enough time, I did. There is a blog site that adresses ONLY sneakers. The contributors know their sneakers like we know our platforms and high heels. I went to your blog…. I had no idea these had such a following. I kinda want a pair now.
Scarlet, You make sense. I didn’t think of the water sports aspect. The website pictured hikers - it is difficult to show the shoes effectively in watersports. When hiking I like more underfoot to protect against rocks and support on my arches when walking. I am planning a Grand Canyon -Havasupai hike later on in the year. I wonder how these would fare there.
Now, I really want a pair - and then take windsurf lessons.

Ugly, yeah but I’m sure they’re perfectly functional. Perfect for sports junkies.

@r5bales,
Give them a shot — what I tell people is that if you like being barefoot, you’ll like VFFs. And they’re great for just about every workout activity you can imagine. I’ve run, climbed trees, lifted weights, done crossfit, sprints, kickball, frisbee, shopped, bummed around a resort in Jamaica — they are great in all of these applications. I even find myself going to them over flip-flops.

my boyfriend had a pair similar but without the seperated toes, that were very functional to wear around rock pools, when swimming in rivers, etc. i think these look very practical in terms of grip and sporty-needs, but personally i think these look a bit too much like crocs for my comfort!

I bought these thinking they would be really good for my feet when I take my “barefoot” dance class. They take a lot of getting used to - all that stuff between all your toes. Aagh. They say you have to keep wearing them to get used to them. But wow are they ugly!

Eeegads! I’ve seen those before and thought they looked like Gollum’s feet in Lord of the Rings.

I think they look great - perfect for people who want to stand out a bit!
I wear them when running mainly (i have them in pink!)… once your used to them the sensation of being barefoot is fantastic. They’ve helped with the heel pain that i get from wearing normal running shoes (which actually make you strike with your heel first). FiveFingers let you move in a more natural motion so you strike your forefoot first.
And they’re multifunctional! I’ll be packing them in my suitcase for when i go surfing at the end of the month!!

I own 3 pairs of them and I like them a lot. I don’t think they are ugly at all! They are funny and the greatest shoes ever made.

Wow… the shoes are cool and creative, at least the design is much creative than Crocs.
