Boots for Chinese New Year
Posted on February 7th, 2008 by Shomore under GeneralHappy Chinese New Year! In honor of this special day, I present to you another page from the wonderful shoe calendar. Shown below are knee high boots with chinese embroidery. Genghis Khan would have loved them!
Normally, I would say that any day is a great day to buy shoes. However, during the Chinese New Year celebrations, buying shoes is a big no-no. In Cantonese, the word “shoes” is a homonym for “rough” and in Mandarin, it means “evil”. So, if you’re superstitious, it might be good to forgo the shoes today in order to avoid a rough patch. Not all superstitions are as hard to embrace though. For example, one of my favorite traditions/excuses is that cleaning is not allowed. Folklore states that cleaning means you’ll sweep all your good luck out the front door. So today is a great day to be lazy.

It’s true about the superstition, but I went out yesterday to take a look at some shoes I’d been eyeing (didn’t get them, they looked cheaper than I remembered) and the store was packed with women of all ages demanding a selection of sizes in a selection of half price shoes.
Oh right, I live in China. And I love your blog!
