Boudoir Stools and Closet Kitsch

posted by: brianka in Just for Kicks, Shoe Accessories on November 6th, 2009

I consider myself lucky to have purchased a house whose previous owner was likely a shoe-lover like me.  At somewhere over 120 pairs of shoes, even I have not yet managed to completely fill up this legacy  walk-through closet.

But, one glaring omission in my closet set-up is the lack of any proper stool or chair on which to sit when actually putting on the day’s shoes. Admittedly, it’s not exactly a crisis – but the daily hopping around on one foot while stuffing my other foot into a shoe would be a bit less comical and more dignified were I to correct this small wardrobe issue.  And, while it need not be fancy – we are after all talking about a piece of furniture that is only briefly needed on any given day – something pretty or fun would be a nice way of starting out the day.

Luckily, today’s postal offerings included some intriguing shopping options in just this area (in the form of a new catalog ‘Design Toscano‘ – on whose mailing list I have apparently been recently added).

Included are a fair selection of salon chairs, tabourets (of which I have always been fond), and boudoir stools to fit a wide number different styles, tastes, and decors.

Among them:

French Salon corner chair $198 $225

Mademoiselle Cezanne’s French slipper chair $249 $298

King Leopold’s cross-frame tabouret $175

Acanthus leaf mahogany tabouret $495

Lady Annette Boudoir stool $89.95

Madame Bouvier boudoir stool $85.00

And, finally, the piece-de-kitschy-resistance:

Folis Bergere boudoir stool $75.00

How much fun is this last piece – definitely not for those who take themselves too seriously.

Which one would you choose – assuming you have a place to even put it?

I'd like having an antic piece in a very modern walk in closet. Like the French salon's. I like having very kitsch stuffs. but just one is enough. But if this store is not worth it…

I like the King Leopold one personally, and it seems to be the better priced of the bunch. But I also agree with the poster who suggested estate sales. I've also found good stuff at Goodwill, believe it or not. It usually needs refinishing/recovering though, so it depends whether you have the time for a project. But it's kind of fun because then you can really personalize, and you can get things really inexpensively, particularly when they're having sales.

I would choose none from that catalog. I write from personal experience, and for those prices you can get something gorgeous from an estate sale or auction that will last many more years and look gorgeous. That particular company does NOT stand behind their products, are grossly overpriced and the quality is extremely substandard. So while from afar they look lovely, I will completely admit that, I can only tell you with all my heart, do not buy anything from them!! There are many better places to look, do not be sucked into the dark side, LOL! I can help you find that perfect piece anytime, it’s what I do, and you’ll adore it, I promise!

They also have individual customer reviews available on-site & I also looked up their BBB rating as an FYI:

and a large review base on amazon & shop.com:

Other cautionary steps for online/catalog purchases in general are to use a credit card – American express if possible, to pay to allow greater charge-back rights.

Well, I'm not in the market this week. But, their reviews were what I expect from a catalog fulfillment company, but their service could have slipped in the last several years…I also worked in the logistics industry for the better portion of my 20's & transportation is really tough on furniture, so I do always open any large package items while the delivery company is present, that way I'm not on the hook for so-called 'concealed' damage. It's also a good idea to not every bump, scratch or imperfection that may show on a box exterior on the Delivery receipt…as a general FYI on receiving large items & high-priced items.
