Friday Shoe History Corner: Elegant 17th century mules
Posted on May 11th, 2007 by shoesense under Shoe History Corner
This is a pair of Baroque ladies mules, decorated with metallic embroidery on ivory silk vamp, red leather heels, from France, ca. 1690-1720. Length: 7 3/4 inches, heel height: 3 3/4 inches. This is the late period of the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and his cunning cardinal, Mazarin; it’s the time of an elaborate lifestyle, the height of the Versailles power and extravagance. This excessively high and not all that practical mule with its intricate embroidery and luxurious materials is a nice reminder of that time.
