Happy Birthday Anna Sui

Anna Sui is celebrating her 46th birthday today.
Anna was born on August 4, 1964 in Detroit, Michigan.  She took an interest in fashion at a very young age and began clipping fashion-magazine pages and put them in a file she calls her Genius Files.

In 1981 she had some friends who made jewelry and were going to sell it at a trade show.  Anna made five pieces of clothing and they asked her to share a booth with them.  She got orders from Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s and was featured in an advertisement in The New York Times.   Anna was working for a company called Glenora when the owner saw the ad.  He asked, “Is this this girl on our payroll?  Why does she have an ad in the Times?”   He then told her she had to stop or he would fire her.  She got fired.  The rest is history.  She laughs and says that starting a fashion line with $300 is a bad business plan.  I would imagine so.

She has done several limited edition collaborations, including Target, FitFlops and Anthropologie.  She has several online sources for clothing, but I found it difficult to find any for her shoes.

Here is what I found.

Gladiator Sandals on sale $277 at Shop Savannas

Grey Suede boots $160 at Shop Savannahs

To celebrate I am going to listen to Motown tunes and have a Chinese meal for dinner.

Love Anna's creations. Need more, but also need other things. Oh well, I guess those gray suede boots are going to have to wait.

Anna Sui is a wonderful designer. All of her designs are unique. I love adding her shoes or a piece of clothing to my outfit. It really spices it up! Happy (belated) Birthday!

Lots of the designers and shoe companies tell stories about having a small amount of capital when they started. Just like anything else, it requires a lot of work that isn't the designer's "job", like janitor, delivery guy and so on. More of the big designers work for a major fashion house or two before starting their own so they can learn with someone else's money.

Interesting story, I also had a friend that wanted to do fashion designing, but she told me that being a fashion designer needs huge amount of budget. I think Anna Sui is a successful fashion designer
