Martha Stewart paints the soles of her Louboutins black
Posted on May 15th, 2008 by Shomore under Christian Louboutin ShoesFor some women, flashing those famous red soled shoes by Christian Louboutin is part of the reason for buying the shoes. There are even cobblers who specialize in protecting those red soles.
The Martha Stewart thinks quite differently. In the latest post on M. Stewart’s blog, she writes:
Karena, my wardrobe mistress, painting the soles of my Louboutins black - I am not a fan of the signature red soles and always change the red to black - this is easy if you use a broad sharpie.
I have divided feelings on this practice. On one hand, I admire and commend Martha for wearing shoes because she likes the style or quality, not simply because they are THE shoe brand to wear. On the other hand, I view many of Louboutin’s shoes as works of art. And one does not go around intentionally messing up someone’s art work before even wearing them, right? Besides, wouldn’t Karena’s time be better spent say, mentoring children or volunteering somewhere? Weigh in. What do you think?

Martha can do anything she wants with her PURCHASED shoes. In fact I would gladly take over for Karena to do it for her. While I like the sight of the red soles and can readily identify CL’s because of them , his styles are just as attractive if the soles are another color.

I really think it is torture to see what she is doing to very new, very expensive and, most of all, very gorgeous shoes… I am wondering though, if she also paints the soles of red Christian Louboutins black…

Go, Martha. And her assistant, er, Wardrobe Mistress. They’re her shoes, and taking care of the apparel is that woman’s JOB, so yes, I’d say there’s nothing whatsoever wrong with her making requested modifications to the wardrobe. A nice designer piece of apparel might be somewhat like a work of art, but since its primary job is to make the woman wearing it happy, she’s perfectly well within her rights to make whatever modifications she needs to feel more comfortable in it!

Very odd duck!

While I would never do it, as I think the red soles are awesome, I can give her kudos for not wanting to be judged by the brand of shoes she wears.. Go Martha, you rebel.

Her time should be spent “mentoring children?” Really?

Yeah, and maybe your time would be better spent “mentoring children or volunteering somewhere” rather than, you know, blogging about shoes. That’s a silly statement to add to what was before that point a valid argument.

All,
Thank you for the feedback and valid points (the last argument by Terri is especially compelling and strikes comes to home of course). Everyone is entitled to do what they want… To each to their own.

a sharpie??!! That brings back images of the first few minutes of Pretty Woman.

I’m guessing this is the LEAST of the strange and pointlessly time-consuming things Martha’s assistant has to do. (Not just Martha’s, either, I’d imagine, but any celebrity’s assistant.) I’d still love to have that job for a day!

Art is art, shoes are shoes. And like a previous reader said, she bought them, she can do what she likes with them. Though, I once read of a Vera Wang dress being altered a bit too much, taking it away from the originally intended look, and it caused the same sort of “respect the art” reaction - and in that case, I agreed! It’s not about where Karena’s time would be better spent. Coloring in Martha’s shoes is something that she gets paid to do (and I’m sure she gets paid well). She should probably wear a mask though cause Sharpies stink!

eh, as an artist, i dont love the idea of someone callously altering my work. couldn’t she just speak to him and special order them? or rather just find a similar pair in the mountains of knock offs, im sure there are well made knock offs out there without the red sole
