Milan Fashion Show: Prada Extravaganza

Every Prada fashion show seems to be pushing the limits of footwear and boldly go where no shoe designer has gone before–remember the Spring 2008 collection, with its extravagant colors and heels taking their cue from a gardening fantasy?  This Fall, in Milan, the shoes take a life of their own, and expand in 3D, exploding into ruffles, multifaceted heels, and spiked excrescences slightly reminiscent of the crested spine of the Stegosaurus. It’s no longer the shoe that hugs the foot, but the shoe that embraces, pokes, and explores the space around it. In fact, shoes like these are hardly accessories: rather, they demand an outfit of their own, making your dress look like an accessory. See for yourself:

The second-to-last one up there–the copper and metallic coffee color one?– looks a lot like a Fluevog slingback from a few years ago, the "Palms" style. (I can only find a tiny pic of it online–sorry!)

I know, what’s up with that? It does seem rather off. Or are the shoes so poorly designed that they can’t stay on the feet without that band? One wonders.

No matter how over-the-top the shoes may be, the orthopedic elastic band brings to mind Stella Toddler, the old bag lady Carol Burnett portrayed on her show.
