Phillip Lim Dee Dee Ankle Boot

posted by: Shomore in Shoe Brands on August 25th, 2010

The ‘Dee Dee’ Boot by Phillip Lim ($875 at Nordstroms) bares a strange association to a kilt with its four tiered grommet leather skirt to me.  But it wasn’t the look of this shoe that really caught my attention.  It was the material of the shoe, which is made of kangaroo!!!

As a Winnie the Pooh fan, the thought of killing off a sweet Kanga or Baby Roo to make this shoe makes Phillip Lim’s Dee Dee a deal breaker.   I’m being hypocritical because cow hide is okay, but perhaps I’m just desensitized because I eat beef and love my leather purses.

What about you?  Would you wear a shoe made of kangaroo leather?

V – obvious from the comments thus far. I know that things like that get even trickier when there are cultural differences from one location/country to another. There are places where animals are cherished in one country that are seen as food in others, (Cattle, dogs, horses). So I didn't realize that there were such strong feelings on this one, since I don't really encounter kangaroo outside of nature preserves like the San Diego wild animal park. I think it comes down to having as much information as possible so that each individual can make the best, informed, choices that they are comfortable with.

Wow, as the writer of this post, I had no idea this would 'stir the pot' so much. (I know, it hindsight I think, how could it not? Yes, I am naive.)

Personally, I'm glad there is a forum here for everyone to share their opinions, even if they are polarizing. I ,for one, have been enlightened by the comments, especially the ones made by Gracia and Galligator. I had no idea the kangaroo population was so strong in Australia and much like Galligator, now find myself open to the idea of kangaroo hide so long as it is done in a humane fashion & preserves the animal food chain. Thank you for educating my thinking.

To all the commentators (both past and future), thank you in advance for sharing your opinions and for being respectful of the opinions of others are well.

G, I agree. But, posing a question as to whether or not a person would wear kangaroo is guaranteed to get some extremely strong responses as it is SUCH a highly charged and controversial topic.

For me, I live in rural area, know a lot of people who raise meat animals, and am not a vegetarian. I live in an area where coyotes and similar animals can be a predation problem for pets and livestock. There are generally laws allowing the shooting of predation animals, although in fact that rarely happens. I generally don't mind the idea of the eating or meat & using of leathers so long as the animal is treated as humanely as possible through the entire process, and that there is little waste of the sacrifice made for food and clothing. I think I've stated in comments elsewhere that is one of the reasons luxury furs don't appeal to me. Using an animal just for the skin/fur without use of the meat is wasteful and distasteful to me unless you live in an area where the temperatures do get so cold that animal furs are the only economical way to get the necessary warmth into clothing needed for extreme temperatures (but these conditions and the people who live in them a vast minority of fur wearers).

I do understand that others carry differing opinions. In this case, I would probably want to get more information (perhaps from the Australian equivalent to fish & wildlife/game management?) because there are times when one animal population becomes so dense that other species suffer, of the species experiencing the population boom begins to outstrip it's food supply & then starve out in large numbers (which happened with local dear population when I was young and a temporary ban on deer hunting lead to large numbers of deer dying of starvation the following winters).

This may be something where views will be very regionally influenced. So far everybody has been direct and polite. Let's stay that way, keep to opinions/facts and avoid personal attacks so we can keep this open for further comments.

I'm entitled to my opinion. The only 'species' that is overpopulating are humans.

I live in Melbourne and I can attest to the fact that kangaroos are overpopulated here (there are more roos than the entire population of Australia), so much so that they are harming the other animal species and have to be shot down. Yes the Aussies do eat roo meat and they can be purchased in supermarkets, and the hide goes into making bags, shoes and footballs. If you think this is inhumane, wearing cowhide shoes is no different.

I think Phillip Lim should be tortured, shot in the head and made into accessories. Barbaric and sickening.

I do know that in some areas kangaroos are considered pests. I have heard that you can pick up kangaroo meats at grocery/butcher shops in parts of OZ. They have been using kangaroo leather for years in custom boot stores. It is quite a soft leather. I would wear kangaroo in a heartbeat.

Wow that's gorgeous? But why kangaroo? Is it that plentiful, or is it cheaper, or what? We're going to have to investigate at ShoeBlog…
