The homepage at the Alexander McQueen website is dark today, with only the following stark announcement to great visitors:

On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
Lee’s family has asked for privacy in orderto come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.

At this time, his death appears to be a suicide and follows just days after his mother’s passing. Such a loss is devastating to those of us who have experienced it; words do not adequately describe the grief, shock and anger that you feel at the loss of a loved one. It is easy to feel unanchored and lost.  It is a shame that he was unable to conquer whatever demons assailed him, and my sympathies go out to those who are closest to him who now have their own grief to bear.

McQueen’s death is also an incredible loss to the fashion world which was enriched by his extraordinary vision and talent.

Rest in Peace, Alexander McQueen.  We will miss you and all the shoes you have brought into this world, including these heart shaped peep toe pumps.

We really need to do a retrospective post, and my hope is that I can get that in within the next several days. Unfortunately, I felt it was more important yesterday morning to get the news out to our readers if they hadn't yet heard. And, since our site owner requires a shoe picture on pretty much every post, that one was chosen and added after I had already published the article. One thing that does occur to me is that even if the house of McQueen decides to continue, it won't be the same; effectively making anything that was produced under his direct artistic hand more valuable and precious. There will be no more 'Authentic McQueen' items after this year, so for those who were hoping to get a piece of his 'someday', current stock may be your last chance to obtain even a simple pump at a non-inflated price.

I am just a regular gal who admired his artistic sense and ability to elevate fashion to high art. But, losing family is hard, and for those around him to lose him just as he was dealing with a personal loss reminds me of how grateful I am for all my own family – who were there for me when I lost my parents, so that I never felt the need to make such a tragic and irreversible decision as McQueen appears to have done. For whatever reason, this death of someone I never even met brings back feelings from the death of my parents, which never completely heals over, but eventually eases from painful to bittersweet with the passage of time.
