Runway to Retail: Valentino Lace Court Shoes

posted by: brianka in Pumps, spring 2010 shoes, Valentino Shoes on March 20th, 2010

For those of you who loved the Valentino Spring 2010 ready-to-wear line – with it’s organic coral-shaped lace embellishments – when it first appeared on the runway last year, you are in luck.

The retail version of these black lace court shoes by Valentino is available now at Nieman Marcus:

However,  on the retail pricing issue, these hit a more negative note.

So, are these retailing for $1000, $2000, or even $3000?

Nay, I say.

These babies will run you a cool $4700 – plus shipping.

Ouch.

Are these pretty?

Yes.

Unique?

Certainly.

Are they nearly 5K worth of all that?

Not in this shoeblogger’s humble opinion.

What do you think?

Gorgeous…but SO not worth the $$$! I would stock up on Louboutins if I had $4,000 to burn.

I also find it interesting that as of December, Valentino was in debt to the tune of $400+ million dollars. I am wondering if V is trying to establish itself as an Hermes luxury brand (European hand made) instead of a Vuitton luxury brand (Chineese factory made). Galligator is correct that the market will decide.

So, now I am trying to make a mental picture of just HOW I could copy this shoe….. I have the pumps…. Now to find the right lace…..

Of course, I look at it from the perspective that I could buy an embroidery machine, embroider my own lace on wash-away stabilizer, and cover my own shoes for at least $1000 less than the cost of these. And then I would still have the embroidery machine I have lusted after for 5 years. I still have that crazy idea that something at this price point should have gears and an engine attached.

My hubby would have a coronary if I purchased shoes that are more expensive than a decent, used motorcycle.

On a positive note, you could probably do a live chat or email & get the shipping waived, or wait for one of their free shipping if you spend XXX dollars promos….:P

They are stunning and unique, but I agree with you, the price is way over the top.

Sarah brought up a good point, with some good taste and crafty talent, one can make a pair of pumps look spectacular.

While I agree with Being Loving Doing that a lot of designers do not want to appeal to the masses, I also think to create something so delicate and to expect people to pay this kind of money is a bit outrageous. Not to mention, when you are catering to a certain type of buyer, you’re going to make them pay shipping? Really? There are supposed to be perks to being able to afford this type of luxury and if Zappos can ship for free both ways on a $1600 Giuseppi Zanotti, then surely if you pay $4700 for a pair of Valentinos’ then Neimans can afford to kick in the shipping. I would not pay $4700 for the shoe partially because it looks too delicate to be worn out, one misstep and the lace is torn. Not cool.

    Gaelle,

These definitely strike me as 'strategically priced' to 'maintain/regain' one luxury brand's idea of exclusivity. The boom years of people buying on credit followed by cut-rate discounts during the initial hit of the recession shook many luxury brands and retailers. A lot of people were disenchanted as to the worth of luxury products that were sold at 70% discounts by retailers struggling to stay afloat. But, now that fewer people are buying on credit, the rise of luxury shoe prices from prices of $300-$600 of past years to the current range of $500-2500 is more than sufficient to maintain a price-side exclusivity for most consumers. Shooting too high in pricing could backfire if it is followed by a drastic sale price to get it to sell. As always, the market will decide whether or not the pricing is too ambitious.

It depends upon how many of them have been released on the market. If they're a few, they're worth it. Plus this price is made for them staying unique for unique people. Sorry girls, the mass we are part of is clearly not the target. That's ugly fashion… did I say fashion? No I wanted to say business.

No they are not worth 4700. What is up with that price. Is each shoe different because of the placement of the lace?? Is there a diamond in that shoe. That price is insane.

they are unique, but i feel like any crafty girl can glue on some lace on a plain pump and make a similar shoe for much less!
