Shoe Art for the Closet
Posted on December 23rd, 2008 by Shomore under GeneralThe hubby and I are very close to closing escrow on a condo. It’s the first home purchase for both of us. You can imagine how excited we are - we are determine to keep the place spotless and I’ve been giddy clipping home/living magazines for decorating ideas.
One dream idea that I have for the master bedroom walk-in closet is to hang a shoe painting.
If I go the photography route, Conde Nast’s online store has a number of fashion images from back issues of Vogue magazines, ranging in price from $150 to over a grand for larger, framed reprints.
My favorites include this summer beach photo by Edward Steichen, which appeared in a 1925 issue of Vogue. What I find so fascinating about this photo is that none of the women were wearing flip flops to the beach. It’s definitely an era before my time.
I also fancy this playful photo by William Bell. Taken in 1959, it shows that shoes from half a century ago could fit right in with modern day fashion.
Equally timeless is Anton Bruehl’s “Six Chic Shoes. They are as trendy looking now as they were in 1933.
Illustration wise, Mark Schwartz is one of my top shoe artists. I love the movement on this “Swirl” work ($145), and those hands in “Second Hand” ($125) are just saying “Come to me, my Precious.”
On the Claudia Lynch website, you can purchase small prints, notecards, and Christmas cards (I need to find out if she also carries larger prints for hanging on a wall). Her renderings of shoes are a fairy tale come true. It’s interesting to see how everyday objects (poodles, sleighs, candy canes) are incorporated into the design of the feminine yet frigale stiletto shoe. Plus, all the little puns she puts into the cards got me to chuckle.
So anyways, those are a few of the ideas for a dreamy closet. What about you? What does your dream closet look like?

I already have my dream closet: floor to ceiling custom shelving in walnut, just for the shoes!
Love the photos and illustrations. It would be difficult for me to choose, too. Sweet dreams!

Oh, I love the idea for art in the closet! I think the photos are particularly wonderful.
Sigh, my closets are so woefully inadequate (little 1930s cottage), I don’t let myself fantasize about something better. My shoes live all over the house… my names has ever been associated with the adjective “spotless,” alas.

Make that “ever” “never”–how much difference an “n” makes.

I’m looking at a collage frame to hold many smaller photos/postcards. That’s another alternative to a larger print.

Beautiful posters. I like some of them, but to put them in the closet are another thing. Maybe they will compatible for a cafe/restaurant that has a shoes theme. It is just my thought.

Putting a print in the closet is a wonderful idea. I have not heard about that idea which makes it even more original. I like the six chic shoes print.

I am in love with those items. Sometimes I think I should sell cool decorative items like that in my showroom.
