Soles4Souls: Shoe Donation Drive

posted by: brianka in General, Piperlime on August 12th, 2008

Founded by Wayne Elsey in 2004, Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charitable organization that has been blogged about here previously.  They are a wonderful charitable group that takes donations of your gently-used shoes and distributes them to people in need. Soles4Souls has distributed over three million pairs of shoes worldwide according to their online partner Piperlime. The shoes have been distributed in more than 60 countries, including Mexico, Honduras, Romania, Thailand, and the Sudan.

And, according to a recent Piperlime email they are currently having a collection drive.  This is a great opportunity to slim down your closet of unworn styles as we move toward summer’s end and anticipate the Fall shopping season.

Simply fill an appropriately sized shipping box with your clean, unwanted, shoes; then seal and mail to:

                           Soles4Souls, Inc. / Piperlime
                           315 Airport Road
                           Roanoke, AL  36274

Or, you can pop over to Piperlime, and look for this banner:

It will open a window that includes the above donation address as well as a pre-addressed PDF shipping label that can be printed out and attached to your donation box for easy shipping. A tax receipt will be sent to you after the shoes are received and sorted.

For me, the timing on this is perfect. I have a box of boots which I have just recently ‘culled’ from my closet.  I think that I will take another look around my closet to see if there is anything else to add for donation. Then I will drive into town to my local Post Office and send them off to someone in need.

I’d love to hear if anyone else will be doing the same.

Soles4Souls is a 501(c)(3) recognized by the IRS; donating parties are eligible for tax advantages. Visit www.GiveShoes.org and www.Soles4Souls.org or call (866) 521-SHOE for more information.

Hello there! I could have sworn I’ve visited this blog before but after browsing through many of the posts I realized it’s new to me.

Regardless, I’m definitely delighted I stumbled upon it and I’ll be book-marking it and checking back often!

Donations to charities are also usually tax deductible. Because this reduces the state's tax income, calls have been raised that the state (and the public in general) should pay more attention towards ensuring that charities actually use this 'tax money' in suitable ways.

[...] I certainly wouldn’t want to share these if they were a part of my closet. I’m afraid the closest I come to the tale’s selflessness (in regard to shoes) is by periodically donating any non-worn shoes in my closet. [...]

This is a copy of the email response I received from Soles4soles representative Mr. Gunter-Evans:

Thank you for contacting Soles4Souls. We accept ALL shoes. Everything from work boots to flip-flops. Sneakers to ballet slippers. Clogs to high heels. We have dealings with many different countries, organizations, and relief groups. As the shoes are received at one of our three warehouses, they are sorted and distributed appropriately.

Also, I know we specify gently worn, but we take everything from brand new to completely unsalvageable. We would rather have you send those shoes to us than throw them away. I think there is a statistic somewhere that says if you gathered ever shoe that was thrown away and put them heel to toe they would stretch all the way to the moon and back. So please, send us every shoe you come up with. If you have any more questions please let me know!

A very worthwhile cause but just thought I’d mention that this is nothing to do with Soles4U, a UK website specialise in large size womens shoes in size 8, size 9, size 10 and size 11.

Their website was down this morning. I can try an email tomorrow & see if they have an answer. If not, there are usually local charities for women’s businesswear/work re-entry that might be worth finding. Anyway, I will have to see what they say.

Will they take stilettoes? Seems to run a bit counter to the concept, but most of my shoes run a little…steep.

If you live near one of Brighton Collectibles’ 125 retail stores (www.brighton.com), you can drop off your shoes for donation to Soles4Souls. A sales associate will give you a receipt for tax purposes.
