Summer Wardrobe Accoutrements
Posted on August 20th, 2009 by trainingheels under Shoe Product ReviewsI have freelance assignments that require me to be on my feet all day long sometimes. For that reason, I absolutely love shoe inserts, and have tried the gamut. There’s a new kid in town, though, and it’s Dr. Scholls’ Adjustable Arch Pain Orthotics. They come in light, medium and high adjustable arch support levels, with little arches that go on the bottom of the inserts, and they’re a wonder! When I’m going to be working or shopping or walking all day, I do high. When I’m going to be sitting most of the day, I do light. And when I’m going dancing, I do medium. Hurrah!
Of course, I got them at Duane Reade, the New Yorker’s answer to everything. I also spied these wonderfully helpful items at DR and snapped a photo of them.
Who doesn’t need these in the summer? Hollywood also makes a variety of other very helpful items, like wardrobe tape.
Thanks to Twinkletoes, I use Topstick like a loyal maniac, especially on a DVF wrap dress that has the tendency to come peeking open at the decollete at the most inconvenient times, like when I’m helping some poor woman carry her baby stroller down the subway steps (I was horrified! Gasp! I couldn’t put the baby stroller down mid-stairs and I didn’t have a hand free to adjust!). Luckily, major wardrobe malfunction was prevented ever after by Topstick, a men’s grooming tape that they use on the runways and that you can get at Manhattan wardrobe supply stores. Now, I can just buy a similar tape Hollywood makes at Duane Reade.
Double Hurrah! Here’s to a comfy-footed, wardrobe functional summer!

I have tried those inserts. I actually have to use 2 different supports for each foot cause (of course) my feet are only ‘mostly’ symmetrical.
But, the Nip-pasties are too much….Bringing me to remember one of my sis’s friends in HS whose mother insisted on band-aids under ‘bra-less’ outfits. OMG…. first of all, why are we so weirded out by our innocuous & natural bumpy bits :-). Second, I couldn’t get past that whole, what if I were in an accident with band-aid nip-covers m- how to explain that to the paramedics…..no thanks…lol. But, it does go to show that for every fashion insecurity we have, someone has made a product to capitalize on it!

Thanks for the tip on the Dr. Scholls arch supports. I think my readers would love to hear about them!

I just can’t do high beams, no matter what. Even when men think it’s sexy! It draws too much attention to that area. Thank god for padded, strapless adjustable bras, but when I’m wearing a skimpy backless dress, I wear Low Beams. http://www.amazon.com/Concealer-Adhesive-Her-Look-Enterprises/dp/B000EGOQ2S
I’ll report back on how the Hollywood ones work!

Another tip for the ladies: padded socks! Nordstrom offers cushion sole knee highs, and they make a big difference in the comfort level of my shoes. I literally just discovered these last week and I don’t know how I lived without them!
These are the ones I’m talking about: http://www.shop.com/Nordstrom+Cushion+Sole+Light+Support+Knee+Highs+Buy+Save+-76438479-p+.xhtml

Poor Trainingheels. I too have accidentally put the girls on display with a surplice wrap dress. I was young and fortunately, had panties on. At my age, the headlights start looking different directions, so I shy away from being unsupported.
My main gripe with Dr. Scholls is their sizing is one size fits all. 6 - 10. That is a lot of difference in foot sizes.

Maybe I’m inured to concerns about high beams & showing off too much. After having had 3 kids who were extended nursers, I got past that whole modesty & personal space issue some time ago. Oops, whatever. Not that I’m gonna intentionally ‘hang it all out there. But once you’ve passed the letter C in the bra alphabet, underwire becomes your near & dear friend…& coverups won’t even cover damage control.
