This Week in Shoes

-Kanye West and fashion designer Louis Vuitton are collaborating on a men’s shoe line. Via NME. I’m curious, will there be glow in the dark shoes?

-Need a way to update your shoes? How about shoe clips, which are modelled by the lovely Shoe Smitten?

-From the Dear Abby Columns.

DEAR ABBY: I have been wondering about the custom of shoe removal when someone is a guest at the home of the person who practices this custom before entering the house.

When the entryway has several pairs of shoes in plain view, it’s obvious the residents remove their footwear before entering the living space. By the way, I am not referring to entering a Japanese home where it is considered disrespectful to leave one’s shoes on.

How can a guest handle a situation like this in your standard American home? Is it appropriate to ask if they would like you to remove your shoes? This can be of particular concern to a woman in dressy attire wearing heels or other footwear to complete her outfit. If she removes her shoes, it can ruin the image she’s trying to present. Walking barefoot or in stockings could be considering tacky. What is the proper etiquette for these circumstances? — FOOTLOOSE IN FLORIDA

[...] We’ve talked about shoe accessories before: try Muleos, or Shoesmitten’s clips. [...]

We have no problems with friendly sniping at shoes that aren’t our style – just check out the forum thread on clear plastic uppers to see that it’s not all oohs and ahs. We all have our own liked & dislikes. We just want to keep things friendly, fun, and respectful. Sometimes folks forget the basics of civility when we go online. I’d like to think we try to keep it welcoming here.

Criticism is ok, personal comments & editorial are potentially cruel and harmful since it can make the atmosphere a bit too catty for comfort. I stick with the rule that if I would only say it because I’m ‘anonymous’, then it’s probably inappropriate to say it at all.

Only you can decide if this is the right group for you. You have all the control on how respectful – or not – to make your internet ‘speech’. Others will react accordingly, and it is easier to take offense at the written word since it is stripped of all visual and auditory clues to sarcasm or other intent.

I heard about the LV/Kanye connection last week and I thought it sounded very promising. I have always wondered what a celeb like him would design for a woman. Just out of curiosity. I hope that his line is a great success because he's someone who appreciates fashion, he doesn't just get styled, he puts thought into it and I appreciate that.

Now on the "Dear Abby" article. I've been to peoples homes who required me to remove my shoes and I can see why..beautiful carpeting..and just respect, but I do not like removing my shoes and walking around barefooted. I agree, if you are going to request that, have fresh unworn, slippers or flip flops for your guests.
