Post FitFlops: Can we flop our way to fitness?

The New York Times reported that the FitFlops generated a virtual craze in England, where 18,000 pairs sold out within three days of their May release, and two women actually got into a brawl over the last pair of size 7s at the London store Running Bare.
What is so remarkable about these flip flops? Well, in a way reminiscent of Masai Barefoot Technology, which have also enjoyed tremendous international success, the FitFlops claim to be designed in such a way as to sculpt your calf, thigh, and buttock muscles as you walk. You may be able to tone and trim your legs, burn more calories, absorb shock and improve posture with their patented "microwobbleboard" sole. Marcia Kilgore, the creator of FitFlops and a former personal trainer, explains that the shoe makes you step more naturally and it activates the slow-twitch muscle fibres in the legs [the fat burners].
Do they work? Only time and wear will tell, I guess. As for me, I am definitely intrigued. There is a 15,000 and growing waiting list in the UK, and one can only expect things to pick up here in the US. Both and Body Works, one of the few online retailers of FitFlops, are already running out of sizes and are currently restocking. The price is reasonable: $39.95. You can also preorder them for $45 at Bliss Spa. The FitFlop website promises to keep us updated as other stores start carrying this product.
Would you try them?

I just rec'd my pair today and immediately put them on. They're cute, and come with a huge warning saying that you can get muscle strain. They're comfy and somewhay cute (albeit a bit clunky) and I felt nothing. So I'd say, don't believe they hype.

Hi and welcome to Shoeforum, Wdstern. I've been wondering about these shoes and whether they are worth the $$$. Now I know.

I don't know, I wouldn't give them up just yet. Maybe she's fantastically in shape, hence adding Fitflops to her routine won't make so much of a difference? At any rate, wdstern, would you mind getting back to us after a few weeks (3-4) and let us know if they made a difference? I bet a lot (A LOT) of people would be interested (me included).

Great! I just had a chat with my MBT Dealer because of the warm weather and that the MBT Sandals can't be worn at this tempratures. This is my way for summer - I feel it. As I posted prev (MBT - Masai Barefoot Technology) I love MBTs.

OK. I did it. I ordered one pair in the UK (at sweatbetty.com). Friendly service, fast post. I am wearing them now about 2 and a half weeks. Quite compfy and pretty with long jeans, a little bit platform feeling. But you get what you pay. For the price they are OK, but to compare with MBTs-NO way! The health point of the fitflops - I didn't recognize the effects really. Yes, it tones your leg muscels a little bit and you go more straight than with other Flipflops, but I think - that's it.

VANmiracle, I'm so glad you're back to report on the FitFlops. You're our resident expert on the "health benefit" shoes like FitFlops and MBT. Thanks for the information.

You are welcome. There is such a hype in the newspapers, I had to try them. But I think Fitflop is something for "fit-shoe" beginners. They are very comfy for gardenwork and driving, so no need to put them into the closet when the fit-sculpt-effect doesnt show up.

Wink Re: FitFlops: Can we flop our way to fitness?

Hi again. Summer is over, but believe it or not ... Right now I wear my FitFlops. I love them - every day a little more. The comfort is unbeatable and the biggest bonus track (laughing allowed): The perfect shoe for painting the toenails! Because somehow the toes manage in that shoe not to stick together even if you walk or ride with fresh painted toenails. The Fit factor? I'm not sure about this, but you walk much straighter with your back like with other flat shoes.
