Ah, the Air Jordan III. We’re deadlocked in the office, NBA style, between whether the IV supersedes the III in terms of design, but we love how this masterpiece took the reigns from Bruce Kilgore’s luxurious II and harnessed the newly designed Revolution (hence the mention of Revolution in the original Tinker Hatfield sketches) to create the link to the IV. There’s definitely a lineage in this shoe, but it has a personality all of its own. Whether it was on Play’s feet on the back of Kid 'n Play's 'Twin Hype' or making a cameo appearance in retro form on Jay-Z's 'The Blueprint' cover, this is a powerful shoe. Once upon a time, to see the elephant print homaged on a Dunk via Supreme was truly novel. Prior to that, it was on the STS and stray Air Trainers, Pegasus, Cortez and Windrunners when it occasionally stampeded from the enclosure. Myths were made that way. Now, it’s on everything. You still can’t beat it on this shoe though — the pattern’s thickness and definition alters with each release, but this III still delivers.

So what’s bad? Don’t compare these to the 1988 (kind of moot, because they’re likely to be unwearable by now) or 2001 editions. Spare yourself that pain. The leather’s that glossy synthetic feeling one from 2011’s IIIs rather than the matt-looking one from 2008’s Countdown Pack and yes, that Jordan lettering on the outsole is like putting Comic Sans on a Ferrari. That chunky plastic hangtag is gone too. There's a lot of good too though - the shape feels a little more accurate than the 2008 (bar the obvious benefit of not having to pay for two shoes that included a mediocre version of the XX), there's less tongue padding but more padding where it's necessary and a more comfortable fit throughout. The paint job's superior too, meaning these shouldn't be so quick to crumble — just because a shoe's from the crack era doesn't mean it should crack.

Crucially, the Jordan III looks like a black and cement Jordan III. It's not excessively banana shaped and all the necessary components are in the right place and crucially, they look good on the foot. Some in the office wear them true to size, while others go half a size down. That's one other thing we don't agree on. That's something worth celebrating. Buy 'em, double, triple or quadruple up and wear them to death.
