For walking sandals, I swear by Teva. I have a pair of the leather straps ones which is very comfy and not as unstylish as their water sandals. They no longer sell the style I have but maybe something like this would be nice? Teva Women's Ventura Cork Sandals - Ventura Cork for Women - Free Shipping on Teva Orders Over $75

Given that your trip is in the southwest, warm season, I think you should consider sandals. There are great comfy options out there--Naot, Birkenstock (I know, I know), Chacos, Thierry Rabotin. The thing is, what suits your budget, style, and needs? I personally would go with a Cole Haan G-series sandal; their molded insole gives me plenty of support, they're comfy, and they're quite attractive.

Yeah, I have a pair of G Series sandals that I love, but they're a bit strappy, and I haven't worn them to walk in for a whole day, so I'm not sure how they'd do. And Birk's were definitely a consideration, but, although their metatarsal support is a huge plus to me (since it basically replaces my orthotics), their arch is a bit too high for me if I'm on my feet for a whole day.
Oh, decisions, decisions.
