The flop shot in golf does not seem like an essential part of the game for many golfers. Most view it as a type of "specialty" shot only the professionals use and deter to a chip or pitch when the situation does not call for these. The fact is, no matter if you are a tour pro or a 30 handicapper, anyone can successfully hit the shot. The shot requires imagination more than anything.

First, you must determine what lie you are in. The lie will determine how hard to hit the ball, and how much spin will be put on the ball. If you are in the rough, it will take a much harder swing or if you are on the fairway, it will take a much softer swing with r11 irons.

Before I walk you through the steps of hitting the flop shot, there is one tip that is vital to hitting a solid, soft flop shot. The club face must be facing completely upwards, meaning it must face the sky. You will notice this is the same way the club face looks when hitting a lob shot with taylormade r11 irons out of a bunker. The key is to keep the clubface facing the sky throughout the entire swing.

These rules are in no way the only way to approach a flop shot, but they are extremely helpful in getting your feet wet. Many people adjust their stance, swing path, or club speed to their liking. The key is to try techniques which will work for you.
